As most of you are aware Diane and I travelled to see the “Mouse” at Walt Disney World the beginning of September. It was our first vacation alone in over 25 years. While we were there we took a behind the scenes tour of the Magic Kingdom. The five hour tour gave us a brief glimpse behind the show which is the magic.
As I walked about and listened to the story of Disney and the philosophy that is so prevalent in they I do, I constantly thought how this could have meaning for us here at Epworth and what we do. A few parallels stand out.
Each employee of WDW is a cast member. They are not workers or employees but members of the cast with a role to play within the production. Each has significance and importance regardless of whether you portray a character or keep the street clean. Each cast member contributes to the overall experience of the guest. In the same way, each of us is a minister here at Epworth and within the Kingdom of God. We each have been given a role to play with the gifts and talents to fulfill that role or calling. Each member of the WDW cast understands the importance of their part to the greater whole. I wonder if we have that same understanding with regards to being part of Epworth? Do we come to this place as a guest or part of the team?
The cleanliness, sounds, aromas and costumes all add to the experience as one travels about the kingdom. Attention to detail subtlely lures us into fully experiencing the joy and wonder of the place. One is not distracted by trash needing to be emptied or places that need paint and repair. The grounds are attractive and inviting. Information is easily available. Each attraction is accessible to all. As you walk about our “kingdom” here at Epworth what do you observe?
At WDW they are always looking to the future. At no time is there a sense of resting on what has been accomplished but rather they are reaching ahead to see what they can accomplish for future generations. In the fall of 2012 a new Fantasyland will open with new and exciting attractions. They are always looking to create a new experiernce even for those who frequent the park. What is our vision for the future? What new experiences are we creating as we journey together? Where is God leading us?
Disney was a genius in creating a world to entertain and experience the joy of life. I believe if we apply some of his simple philosophies here we can transform our piece of the Kingdom where people will come and experience love, grace, caring and hope. Each of us has a role to play in making that happen. We need to look around and see that is much to be done. We need to look ahead and see what it is that we can do to transform our church and community to meet the needs of people to come. As a result of us being in ministry together people will come to see the Lord.
